FORMER Deputy Premier Joan Sheldon has renewed calls for jet skis to be banned in Pumicestone Passage, saying ‘cowboys’ were threatening fishing habitats, boating safety and the breeding grounds of migratory birds.
Mrs Sheldon, who lives on the Passage, said residents had been calling for action for more than a decade and the time for ‘consultation’ was well and truly over.
Her comments come as the Shadow Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt will visit the Passage today with Longman MP Wyatt Roy and Caloundra MP Mark McArdle to consider the impact of the huge Caloundra South development.
Mrs Sheldon said she could not understand how jet skis were still allowed in the Passage given its status under the international Ramsar Convention protecting key wetlands.................
