The surfer was a lucky guy that day.
Someone posted a similar surfer vs ski pic a couple of mths ago, where a ski rider was surfing the top of a big tube-wave, while a surfer was directly underneath, surfing the tube....neither looked to be aware of each other.
Well done to the trigger finger who snapped those shots
