Fellow riders
Being involved heavily in the PWC industry in the last few years, attending many of the meetings/forums regarding PWC’s in NSW there is one issue that keeps popping its head up and wont go away unless something is done about it. Revesby Beach / Picnic Point. For the people who don’t know Revesby Beach is located on the Georges River at the end of The River Road and is a little beach in the Georges River National Park. It is a great location to ride your PWC with great family friendly amities.
Over the last few months this has been a hot topic within the NSW Maritime headquarters. Revesby Beach has been branded the Hoon Hot Spot for PWC riders. Revesby beach can become quite busy on a nice weekend with boaters, PWCs and families.
Although it has come under scrutiny from Maritime and the general public.
As always it’s only a minority of riders in this area which need to be educated and I can say this proudly that the majority of riders are responsible and we thank these people for keeping up the image of our sport.
Straight up and no beating around, we need fix these issue pronto.
NSW Maritime are undergoing surveillance of the area Maritime officers heavily patrolling the area and NSW Police patrolling the beach.
The main issues observed in the area are as follows.
PWC riders operating to close to shore and to close to swimmers in the water – Distance Off
PWC riders have been observed riding to close to swimmers in the water. This is extremely dangerous. If you loose control and hit a swimmer you are guaranteed to cause injury or even death.
Remember: When driving a PWC at 10 knots or more you must keep the minimum distance of
• 30 metres from power-driven vessels (including other PWC), land and structures (including jetties, bridges, moorings and navigation markers) or,
• 60 metres from persons or non-powered vessels (sailing and passive)
• A safe distance from any vessel towing a person. Drivers and passengers should also be cautious of the ‘jet stream’ from the engine. At close range this jet stream can be harmful to a person
Another big issue in the area is Irresponsible riding. Is has been noted that there are many PWC riders in the area performing irresponsible manoeuvres i.e. spraying other riders and swimmers with the jet of the PWC. Performing “bunny hops” with a passenger standing on the rear of the PWC whilst the rider flutters the throttle, following other vessels to close and jumping their wake.
I don’t want to sound like a part pooper of anything but if you want to perform these actions feel free to do so just don’t do it around people in the water or another vessels on the water. Do it in a corner of the river where there is no one around and no one you can injure or annoy.
One last point I might touch on
Loitering
Revesby Beach/Picnic Point is not only used by PWC riders, there are families who gather down there for BBQ’s, picnics and just a relaxing day out.
Now you can imagine how intimidated they would feel walking down to the water when they can see 2 to 3 groups of 10+ guys and girls standing around one PWC waiting for a ride NOT EXAGGERATING.
Don’t all gather around one ski for a prolonged period of time, find a nice place on the grass and relax. By standing on the shore in groups is an invitation for the rider of the PWC to show off.
To sum up I am writing this post to create awareness and to inform fellows riders the NSW Maritime will be cracking down quit heavily on this area over the summer period.
Don’t take this in a bad way; we just need to create awareness of these issues so that it can be fixed before Maritime start handing out fines or someone gets seriously injured.
Launch your ski get on it and go for a ride. The River is massive, dont be confimed to the few 100m of the river all day.
So please next time you are down there take care and ride safe take into consideration other riders, vessel operators and families and how you will be affecting them. If you want to mess around go somewhere where there are no swimmers in the water and families to intimidate.
Here is a map of the area:
You feedback, thoughts and comments are welcome.
Ride Safe.
