Talking new and not sure if this is for me

Hi ... I am spending a lot of time researching PWC's ........... that is how my other toys in the shed got started, so this is becoming serious. I live near the ocean (merimbula) and have an overwhelming desire to get out on it . Especially when its a mill pond. But my desire is to go quite a way off shore. How silly is it to take a PWC 5 km or more off shore. I am thinking of having a radio, gps, flares, inflatable undies, shark repellent etc, but I am not sure if these craft were designed for this.
I have been looking for a boat to satisfy my desire, but crikey they get expensive when you start factoring in safety and reliability. I am hoping that a medium performanced, largish, sedately ridden ski might be an option. waddayathink ????

you will need to check your local water regulations as to how far from shore you can go in a PWC. In perth you are limited to 5 nmiles.. even with all the correct safteygear

+1 what chook said and always make sure you take another ski out when you head offshore! Grab an Ultra 250 or RXT-X nice speeds out of the box and handle the rough stuff superb. Mate if anyone tells you they are gonna be doing 75-80 plus offshore (rough) for an extended time their lying it's about hookup and reliability

hey thanx guys. Sounds like sound advice. But damn it I say ..... my favourite sports all require a buddy. Spearfishing and dirt bikes and potentially PWC's.. It is rare that I can find someone to go with. I am on call 24 X 7 ..... and never know when a day off may occur. I do dive on my own, and motorcycle on my own ........ but certainly more cautiously than with a crew ...... I wonder how many pwc owners poke around on their own. Mostly I would hug the coast and carry a set of flippers. But if the forcast was good I reckon the horizon would beckon. Is this attitude moderately dangerous or extremely dangerous. I dont have a death wish.

Mate I hear ya but if your going offshore best practice would be to take someone with you and if you really can't at least let the coastguard know of your planned course and estimated times etc. (make sure to have a plan in place )

....... thats good advice ........ I have been planning to do some volunteer work with the coast guard, and letting them know an exact course seems highly plausable. Which will bring me to the next question. If reliability was the priority for a fare - weather sailor, which jet ski's would be worth looking at. I have only hired Hondas, which I enjoyed immensely, but I reckon each brand would have its good points. Sea doo does have some hostile fans on the internet, but the same thing happens in BMW motorbike forums, and it doesn't tell the full picture. I would value anyones comments in reguard to reliability. Would a low tech option from any manufacturer be a game plan, or isn't low tech an issue. I am thinking maybe sans turbo or similar. Do they make a diesel jet ski ?? ( joking !!!).

Hey helmet ..... I see the Headland charter sign often ........ but dont know the Gatt family. But we will make a point of it. We live between Short and Long point.
I agree with you about the Yamahas now, it seems to be the opinion everywhere. I still do like Honda as a brand, but I here they are not doing PWC's in 2010 ......... to me that rings a few bells. Anyway I seem to be looking at near new VX's and SHO cruisers. The feedback I have received in here has been instrumental.

Mate if your looking at predominately offshore etc as far as reliability goes ULTRA 250, RXT-X, SHO, Honda 15X all would be a good choice for offshore and as long as you keep the mods modest you won't be messing with the reliability

...... good advice always has a certain ring to it. Thankyou. I might have to ride over the west to thank you properly. Speaking of which, do many PWC people embark on long voyagers ???? I remember hearing of a chap about 15 years ago attempted to circumnavigate Australia on a jet ski, but never made it. ( as I recall ). But some of these later craft seem to be very capable ..... or maybe I am just showing my lack of knowledge. Any long distance travellers care to comment ?
