Upgrading Intake Grates, Ride Plates, Impellers etc Whats the Pros & Cons

Hey just bought a 98 Yamaha GP1200 stock no mods at all
just wanted to know what the gain is with upgrading Intake grates, ride plates, impellers, sponsons etc
what does it do to your acceleration, speed, handing etc are there any sacrifices when upgrading to any of these?
    thanks

you will get a gain with the right gear, the first think i would suggest is setting a target, if you want to hit 70+ or 80+ etc

Then what you need to do is set a budget, because this will determine what gear you need to get

Most mods will give you a gain somewhere, some in handling, some in speed and the right combination and tuning you good see some very good speeds, also bad combination can be bad.

Intake grate will feed more water in increasing speed the plate will give you a different ride, some plates can get you over the chop better some are better on flat water which will make you go a lot faster

Impeller is a good mod but you do need to have other gear to be able to spin it faster otherwise ull be going backwards, you would need to consider doing the compression on your head and other mods

Sponsons are good for handling and you can get some changes in speed by modifying them slightly

Overall they are all performance bits using them in the right combination will give you gains in acceleration, top end and mid range speed, and handling.

You will chew up more petrol but you will have a lot more fun if you interested in adding parts let me know your budget and target and i'll help ya out

thanks mate very helpful ill probably progress through these mods individually probably starting with a new set of sponsons as my stock yamaha YAS sponsons are cracked and flimsey,
ide also like to know where to get a hold of an intake grate, ive noticed the aussie company worx make them for my model,
my ski already does 100kmh stock would the intake grate make any difference to that speed?

yeh mate if your sponsons have had it get a set of those for sure

Best place at the moment is the states you will need to wait 7 days but it's the best and most likely the cheapest i know a few guys there selling some parts for your ski which should give you a good bang for your buck

If i was you i would get an intake grate and ride plate + a pump shoe kit this will remove cavitation and make your ski quicker and more fuel efficient!

mate i can help you fit the pump shoe kit no problem, they are about $70 AUD and i think i can source you an intake grate for about 60US and a ride plate for about 70US + Shipping

Your better off doing all these at the same time, and they are second hand parts except for the pump shoe kit that will be brand new!

its a GP1200 not the GP1200R thats a later model mine has 135hp the latter has 155hp im pretty sure its the same engine tho with a few modifications
but the hulls are completely different so they would have different aftermarket parts for each model
