i was wondering if any 1 can help me iv had my jet ski in storage for bout 12 months, decided to take it out and had problems starting it so i put a new battery in it along with new plugs all im getting is a clicking sound. assuming seizure i checked to see if i can move the shaft and it seems to be seized then continued to remove the shaft from the fly the shaft has movenent but the fly doesent. also tried cranking without the plug and putting oil down there to lubricate the cylinders but still no movement. was told there are bearings some where that may have seized due to a long storage or a insufficiant flush after usage.the ski only has 20 hours on the clock so any help on where i go from here will be much appreciated
Your on the right track, thats everything I would have done. Now I would pull out the tools and strip the engine, thats always fun . If you have never done it before its pretty simple, especially being a 98 model. Just start from the top and work your way down. You sould be able to just take the head off and push the pistons to see if the move, make sure you disconect the drive shaft to eliminate if that is the seized part. If pistons dont move then pull of the cylinders and check the crank. Is it these bottom end bearings you are refering to??? Just a bit confused as these dont matter if you flush the ski or not as there inside covered with oil. If you do stip the engine, be very carefull with the gaskets, otherwise you will have to buy some more, usually around 100$ for the set. Or you can make your own out of manila folders if they were originally paper gaskets. Ive done that heaps with old motorbikes, works a treat, most people laugh when they here that .
cheers for the reply. im not too sure bout the berring just somthing a heard from some one els im pretty new with jet skies as i have only had mine for just over a year and only ridden it a few times since i got it lol. didnt think a seize was possible for such little use. but apparently common if not winterised properly. ok i have disconnected the shaft removed all the bolts for the head iv tried removing the head but seems to be on pretty good gave it couple taps with a rubber mallet to get the seal to break but no luck. anything u can sugest to remove it as being new at this i dont want to damage anything.
If you have all the nuts off, give it a spray with some WD40 around each stud. Let it sit for 5mins then give it a wack. Theres usually alignment dowels around the studs that are a very snug fit that have to loosen up. When you put it back together, wipe a little bit of oil around these dowels to reduce this probelm next time.
Just thought about this abit more. Pulling the head prob wont achieve much so will prob have to pull the cylinder off. At least then you will know its not the pistons that are siezed, which is good news. Then it only leaves the bottom end bearings on the crank.
As you said before, you didnt think a siezure could happen in 12 months, I would be very surprised as well. But you have to eliminate all these areas untill you find the answer.
ok its a two stroke rotax 787 engine..i have removed all bolts holding head and cylynder heads off but like u said achieved nothing. now im on to getting the cylinder off i have pryed at it a couple times got verry little movement out of it, is there something els im supose to disconnect except the top bolts and exhaust or is there a certain method of removeing it?
yeh there shouldnt be anything special holding this on. If you go around the base of the cylinder and make sure there are no extra tabs or anything with a bolt in it. Once sure all nuts are off, use you mallet to hit the corners of the cylinder. It probably stiff because of those alignment dowels i talked about earlier. These are usually installed diagonally to each other. So when hitting, hit one side than diagonally on the other side. If no movement then try the other diagonals. It should come, just work it slowly.
