    Question Plugs fouling

    Guys,

I started up my ski after it had been sitting for a while.
Although it started 1st time, there was a lot more smoke than normal.
I ran it on the hose for a good 5 mins just to let it all run through.
Whilst it was running, there was also smoke coming out of the jet nozzle.
On removing the plugs, all three were fouled.
The ski seemed to be running OK, but the excess smoke and fouled plugs are a concern.
Am I looking at a top-end rebuild or is it something less drastic?

    cheers,

    Gus.

How many hours? Compression # on cylinders?

I bet it's okay. It's 2 smoke and pretty normal for that engine whilst flushing. And the plugs will clear when you take it for a proper run.

Smoke or vapour coming out of the jet nozzle? I bet it's vapour.

115 hrs total, about 25 hrs on these plugs.
    Not checked the compression yet.

take it for a good hard ride and it will clean itself out just a bit oily from the fuel evaporating in the sump and leaving excess oil. just needs a good ride to heat things up and burn the oil up.

There's some good advise there. Fouled plugs could be due to the way it was ridden last ride too, ie- if it was babied for most of the duration. This combined with a rich oil mix or even oil type could do it. Some oils do just smoke, others will foul plugs more than some wether they are mixed correctly or not, particularly if the throttle rarely gets opened right up.

I agree with pav1200, not only has an oily residue been left from the time it has sat, but that residue will likely have dried somewhat, making it smoke from heat also. If all else seems ok, a good ride could be the fix.

    OK, good stuff.
Last outing was towing down at Deepwater P. so only going at half the normal speed.
Using the recommended Yamalube 2-W oil.
Next ride will be mostly WOT, either down at the narrows or an Ocean run.
Just look out for all the smog, that'll be me!! Like a James Bond style smoke screen for the water cops!

    Cheers,

    Gus.

yamalube always runs a bit smokey but a bit of smoke on a two stroke is allways a good sign

So the story of this 2 smoker GP1300R is... it startin doing this at 36hrs and only straight after it came out of the workshop from an exhaust meltdown from a water inlet hose coming off under warranty conditions..(loose clamp from factory) Happens when running on the hose after sitting for cpl days... would run like an absolute pig when first put back on water but give it a good floggin straight up and will get rid of the crap and run sweet all day.... clean up ,pack away, then smokes every time been sitting more than a day!
Took back to workshop showed them the pics... hmmm nup cant seem to get it to smoke.... or more likely... dont have a clue so dunno why or how to fix!!!
The ski has been doing this for 18mths and so far no problem other than smokin like a pig to start off but then fine so figure its oil leaking into the motor when sitting so it's not really all that bad coz reckon it's "self winterising" protecting from corrosion I guess with oil in there !!

There probably is something wrong but who does know? Cant find anyone who knows and ski is fine every other way and has done another 36hrs since. Mind you I have noticed lately it is doing it less!

Guski, do you store ski with nose up? I usually have ski stored with nose high but then recently it gets stored flat so maybe this is co-incidence or not!
And other variable I have thought is I usually keep oil tank full but it hasnt been full lately and that may be something too???
Guess I should really do a proper test!!!

    She-ra,

It was very similar. Maybe even a little more smoke than that. But as it was a bit windy, all the neighbours got some too!!
I usually keep the oil tank full and the ski is more or less flat on the trailer.
Previously it has smoked on the hose, just this time there seemed about 3 times as much smoke.
Will put in a new set of plugs and take it for a proper blast later in the week.

Have you noticed any increase/decrease in the amount of oil usage?
Maybe it's time to block off the oil injection and run pre-mix??

    Gus.
