    Hi Guys

Firstly just a quick hello great little forum you have here... shame i didnt find it earlier

Was away over the long weekend & the ski lost power about 15k from home ( up river ) so we putted it home with a max speed of about 15 knots.

Once we arrived home lifted the cover to find a dirty black oil gushed over one side of the engine bay. Put it away for the weekend hoping it was just a burst hose or something..

Got the call from Yamaha yesterday saying that a piston has come through and damaged the head & crank.... total est cost for repairs is 11K.. New engine basically ( sketchy on details as im not that mechanical )

Ski has been well looked after, always serviced by yamaha & only done 100hrs...totally gutted to be honest as it was running like a dream until this happened.... Even when it did happen it didn't sound serious or bang or anything.

Can anyone recommend someone good in Melbourne to take a second look & or who might have reconditioned engines...

Apparently Yamaha said its a common problem... ???

I dont think its good enough considering the cost to purchase / maintain & run there things.

Anyway just venting as my fav little toy is no longer !

    Tom

Sorry to hear of your trouble, but the engine in your ski and GPRs should be rebuilt at 100 hours or before to alleviate blow ups.
Compression needs to be checked often leading up to 100 hours and these should be fitted.
(Comp. pressure 130 down to 100 and EVEN on all cylinders.)
TCW3 oil should be used also.

Typical of these engines am afraid.

What happened sometime in the past, is a little moisture got into the inlet, to the crank area, and spotted a very little rust in the bearings somewhere. A bit like dry rot.

Could be days, weeks or years, ....but once in there, the crank bearings eat themselves away with wear etc, and eventually let go.

He used it for 7 hrs before it blew... and he bought from a dealer too!!

Eventually the bearings let go a little, the piston flails around aimless, and eventually leads to hole in crank case, usually below the cylinder that has let-go.

Re-con engines start around the $4-5k mark. The barrels in these are nikasil plated, and to "Re-do" one costs around the $580 mark per barrel..!!

Now if the crank has gone, well they are about $1k a shot, then pistons, bearings, seals, gaskets.... and of course Crank-Cases.

Not much change from $5.5k in reality if it was re-done.

I had one in here, and the cost to renew it all left him thinking of another ski, as if he re-built his, he would still have the same ski, but less the cost of all being new!!

He cut his losses, sold the ski as a wreck, put a few thou to it, and ended up with a NEW RXP for the same cost almost.

His Ski was mint condition too before the same happened to him.

Supposed to be worth $6-8k with trailer at the time. By time engine in and fitted, it would have been double the outlay almost, and still for the same ski.

I don't think he looked back once after he shook this one off.

It can be done, and is one option, the other is write it off, and look forward to things anew.

I still have pieces of the engine in a jar here for him as reminders too, and can send a pic if you want to compare, but, you will find piston and case pieces if you search around under the engine.

    OOUUCCCHHH thats gotta hurt mate.
    Sad to hear that.

Like Richie said for the money your going to spend to get it going
your better off putting a few $$ on top and grabing yourself a new ski.

Does insurance cover engine damage? Is so write it off.
If not salvage what you can and sell for parts.

it's your pride and joy so most prob going to be hard leaving it in that state.

    Good luck mate
    keep us posted.

    Hey Tom,

If your hell bent on a rebuild flick us an email, a bloke was just quoted 9k in parts from BRP for a 4tec and the same parts I got him for 5 so if you want to cut the parts bill almost in half give us a yell. (The prices the manufacturers charge is BS)

    Tom,

Please don't give it away for that price. If you have the time seriously part it out on ebay or whatever. You'd be suprised at what you can make doing it this way sell every little bit seperate.

Don't, you'll be sat on bits for ever.

What is in there really of any value now.... and be realistic about it.

The engine is the big seller, but its goosed. So the hull.... well how often do people pay top bucks for a hull???

    Trailer... maybe $800.

So what have you got left??

Bin it quickly is my advice, or go $580 per barrel, and $1k per crank, then gaskets, then all the bits that you never noticed about it, and then if it don't work, the heart-ache after that...!!

$2.5k for a wrecked one is a good price to see the back of it imo.

$4k for a good re-con engine pulls it back to going price, less the installation of it... which aint gonna be cheap.
