First Ski and very confused! Please help!

    Hi,

    I just bought a 2004 waverunner xlt1200.

I am having trouble getting it started, it's been in a garage for about 2 years the previous owner broke his back whilst riding it so left it under a cover in the garage!

Being his son in law I thought it only civil that I buy it and give it some TLC. It's otherwise in very good condition but I want to have somebody give it the once over and give it a good service.

This is my first post so I'm not sure if there's a business forum!

    - Can you recommend anybody in sydney who is good with waverunners and not too expensive.

If this is against the rules could you please send details to my email address dreeve@deloitte.com.au

On another note I noticed all of sydney is practically anti-pwc, I know you can go down to long reef beach but are there any other good spots?

It should go by doing the following.
Charge to battery to full capacity. Has it been kept charged over the past 2 years? If not you will need a new one. Suggest very strongly the same that's probably in it, a Yuasa.
A few litres of fresh fuel in the tank.
Pull the plugs, put a teaspoon of fuel and a 1/2 teaspoon of TCW3 oil (The same that goes into the oil tank....make sure that's topped up by the way)
into each cylinder, back with the plugs, on with the leads, attach the lanyard and hit the green button. It should fire.

Only run it for a moment though or you will overheat the engine and lose it. Run it on the hose or in the water is safer.

How many hours has it done? If over 100 it should have the carbs rebuilt.
Check compression. It MUST be even on all cylinders and read from 130psi down to a minimum of 100psi..........repeat, EVEN on all cylinders, otherwise it needs a top end rebuild.

Good luck, let's know how you go.

it was 85 last time I checked, given he broke his back on it it has not been taken out alot since then!

replaced the plugs, topped up the oil and fuel.

I'm hoping there is nothing majorly wrong with it as it was going very well last summer!

With xmas coming up I'd prefer to save a little bit before payin a grand plus to have the carby rebuilt.

Booked it in to let the professionals give it a maintenance service and get it going!

    Thanks for your advice gossie!

2 years is a long time motionless for a stroker.

Many things can develop in the cylinders that will affect it's health.

As Gossie says, lube the cylinders firstly, and with no power on, or avail, I would turn the motor by hand firstly for a few rotations to check if it is moving.

These skis let-go rapidly, and with great expense if not ok inside.

Fuel will be rancid by now for sure.

You will have to get the motor spinning to get accurate compression figures, as the rings may be a little jammed in the pistons.

The great gamble is the bottom end. Any slight corrosion wil spell doom for the engine. If they give in, then the rods will appear through the cases for you.

Post Q's, and we take it from here.
