Iv got a lot more kowledge of the import business than you would think. I am very surprised to hear that jet skis are duty free (if thats true) but the rest of what I mentioned is the cost involved in importing anything in to Australia that cost more than $1000AUD. Quarantine may only be necessary in W.A. and warf fees only if your shipping.
I'm not saying your not better off doing it, in fact I have imported many Japanese performance cars/parts and saved. Its just I always calculate the cost of the goods plus the included taxes and postage to make sure I'm actually getting a saving.
I'v been thinking about importing skis since reading this and I'm thinking you could fit 8 skis in a sea container and save heaps on shipping costs, all the paperwork is done as one item saving a huge headache. Then pick the skis up from one location.
This kind of importing would really be worth doing and would reap some serious savings as there is also the group buying discount on the units themselves.
I looked into this very seriouly just before I bought my ski locally. I was looking at the 2009 ho's or the 2010 ho's. The dollar was at 90cents. I got to the point where I could have a brand new 2010 HO to australia for about 16500, including all costs to get it on the road and water. But I bought a 6mnth old 2009 HO for 17g's. To me it was not worth the risks involved with importing. Theres nothing better than cash on delivery so second hand was the way to go.
Costs involved with importing are:
GST
Customs brocker fees
Port charges - both from and too.
shipping and insurance
delivery costs
Then when it gets here
Trailer
rego's
fluids
might still be missing some costs, but thats all I can remember at the moment. I will look at it again if the dollar breaks 1:1 with the US.
and yes jetskis are DUTY FREE, that is a fact.
