    Question 2005 XLT 1200 questions

Hi all First post here on this Forum, i have read through lots of Posts and I am very satisfied with the knowledge base from active members.

I am Purchasing a Yamaha 2005 XLT 1200 with only 38hours on the clock. Cosmetically the unit is perfect and is Stock. Test riding on the weekend and speed maxxed out at 80kmh with trim set at neutral position. No noticable difference with trim up or down for speed. I am a novice in this area and from reading others posts based on speed output from stock XLT1200's should this be a concern? The guy i am purchasing it off knows nothing mechanical about these things so he just assumes 80kmh is the top speed. I beg to differ from what i have researched so far on stock units.

Do the units have a factory governor whilst running in that has to be reset or removed after service? or could there be another problem somewhere like throttle adjustment not giving full throttle?

    Thanks.

The 80kmh on the speedo on the ski may not be correct as they seldom are.
The only way to know the correct top speed is to take a GPS with you to find out.
It should do about 60mph or about 95kph top end.
A way to make the speedo read faster is to spray WD40 or similar on the rotating wheel at the rear on the ride plate.
You should also keep an eye on the tacho. and see if it's holding close to 7000rpm at top speed. If it's not, then there may be a problem??????

    80kph is way down.

Also check your impeller/pump unit for any snagged rope or debris.
There should be very little clearance between the impeller and the wear ring.
Though 38 hours on an 05 ski is low. Check impeller for damage also.
Any info on service schedules, repairs, carbie cleans etc???
You might be in for a carbie service...

What sort of damage would effect impeller and overall performance? are we talking bent or broken impeller fins? or would even slight scuff marks cause performance issues?. Unit starts and runs perfectly no noticeable problems with acceleration or getting out of the hole from a standing start so to speak. No misfires, plugs are new. Running premium fuel since new. I will get a GPS to test top speed and go from there. thanks.

FWIW you only need regular fuel in a stock XLT/GPR.
Check the decal on the ski and in the books that MUST come with the ski if you don't believe me. Mr Yamahaha said so.
Beside the books/manual there should be a plastic bag of tools.

Ok got the Ski Took it out last Friday checked the "dream o meter for proper operation and all good, RPM at WOT reads 7thou on the digital gauge. Speedo still reads 84kmh at WOT so GPS test next time the weather is good enough. Love this thing, why did i ever waste money on a boat.!!!

if your ski has a aftermarket rideplate they quite often give you lower speed readings
